Set your work aside for a second and take a quiz:

When you sit and do nothing, do you feel guilty or anxious? Do family members complain about how much you work? Do you feel uncomfortable if you’re not busy? Do you prefer to help organize events in order to avoid sitting around and talking to people?

If you’re answering yes, you may have a problem with workaholism. And you needn’t be a high-powered executive to qualify: homemakers, volunteers, students, retirees, hobbyists, employees, and bosses all can suffer.

The key is whether or not you use activity to distract yourself from your feelings, from intimacy with yourself and others. Workaholism isn’t about productivity; it’s about staying busy.

Have you ever been so busy arranging a funeral that you didn’t feel the pain until afterward? Most people use activity at some point to avoid dealing with feelings.

Overworking is a serious compulsion that can destroy marriages and even cause death. And it doesn’t lead to a simpler life.

While the number of workaholics is unknown, the American work week has increased from forty hours to 43.2. People work longer hours today than ever before in this century. The American Medical Association acknowledged in the April 1990 Journal that work stress and heart attacks are related.

What’s the difference between a hard worker and a workaholic?

The hard worker is busy with a project, enjoys it, and returns to other aspects of life when the work is done. Just because you work hard and feel passionate about your job doesn’t mean you’re a workaholic. Hard workers take care of themselves and maintain balance in their lives; they make changes if they get stressed.

Workaholics, on the other hand, have no limits. They don’t necessarily enjoy what they’re doing. They work like automatons. And they persist with the frantic activity even when it affects them adversely (poor health, spouse and children suffering, etc.).
